Background

Agriculture is deeply rooted in Dutch history and culture. The Netherlands has a long-standing tradition of agricultural innovation and sustainability practices, dating back centuries. Dutch expertise in agriculture has led to significant advancements in farming techniques, water management, and crop cultivation. Dutch companies are renowned for their exports in the agricultural sector, contributing to global food security and sustainable farming practices. As a global leader in agriculture, the Netherlands is committed to sharing its knowledge and expertise with other countries to address global challenges such as hunger and malnutrition.

Azerbaijan and the Netherlands have been cooperating across various areas of the agricultural sector, including seed production, greenhouse development and technology, as well as dairy, poultry, and meat production. A key priority for the Netherlands is the introduction of advanced technologies aimed at enhancing the efficiency and productivity of Azerbaijan’s agricultural sector. In addition, vocational education and training remain a vital area where the Netherlands brings substantial expertise, offering valuable opportunities to support Azerbaijan’s long-term agricultural development.

For some highlights of our cooperation, we can mention the following:

The study by Wageningen University on Azerbaijan from 2017 indicates a positive market outlook for Azerbaijan's agricultural and food sectors. However, it requires investment in modern technology, skills, vocational training, services, and agricultural equipment—areas where Dutch expertise is valuable.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Agriculture, Majnun Mammadov, visited the Netherlands in 2024 seeking cooperation with the Netherlands in modernization of horticulture, seed and flower growing, and agricultural research and education.

Moreover, the Dutch Development Bank (FMO) has long-standing cooperation with Bank Respublika since 2013. The recent loan agreement between the Banks for financing green projects was signed on the margins of COP29. Furthermore, FMO has made its first agribusiness investment in the Caucasus, selecting Azerbaijan for this milestone and in 2024, FMO has signed the loan agreement with Araz Supermarkets for enhancing supermarkets’ capacity and expanding their coverage.
